Last week, the Shoals proved once again that it knows how to do two things exceptionally well: celebrate community and indulge in something sweet.

At the much-anticipated Sweet Sounds of the Shoals, hosted by the Shoals Chamber, local dessert makers brought their best creations to the table, all competing for one coveted title, Best Dessert in the Shoals. After an evening filled with sugar, creativity, and plenty of tough decisions, one standout rose above the rest: Lee Street Café claimed first place.

A Sweet Victory Worth Celebrating

From the moment guests stepped into the event, it was clear this wasn’t just a casual tasting, it was a full-on dessert showdown. Tables were lined with everything from rich, decadent custards to delicate petit fours and inventive confections. Each vendor brought their own personality and flavor to the competition, making the judges’ job anything but easy.

But Lee Street Café managed to do what every great dessert should: stop people in their tracks with their signature Apple Fritter.

Whether it was the crunchy texture, balance of flavor with a pinch of super-secret cinnamon, or that “just one more bite” effect, their winning apple fritter clearly struck a chord. In a room full of standout sweets, they created something memorable enough to earn top honors.

Familiar Faces & Standout Competitors

While Lee Street Café took home the top prize, they were in incredibly good company. The competition featured several talented bakers and dessert creators, some of whom readers may recognize from the latest issue of Cottage Bakers of the Shoals.

Names like Flour & Flame, Campbell's Kitchen, and Buttercream Bliss Cupcakery brought the same level of creativity and craftsmanship that earned them a spotlight in the local cottage baking scene. Seeing these familiar faces step into a live competition setting only reinforced what many already know: the Shoals is full of serious dessert talent.

Other notable competitors like Boss Babe Brownie Company and Jill's Sweet Memories also made strong impressions, showcasing everything from classic Southern flavors to bold, modern twists. Each table told its own story, and each bite made it clear just how passionate this community is about great food.

What Made It Special?

While every attendee may have had their own personal favorite, winning a competition like this usually comes down to a few key things:

  • Flavor that stands out even with a familiar favorite

  • Texture that entices you to take another bite

  • And that hard-to-define factor… attention to detail

Lee Street Café delivered on all fronts.

More Than a Competition

Events like Sweet Sounds of the Shoals are about more than just winning, they’re about showcasing the incredible talent right here in our local food scene. From seasoned bakers to rising stars, the night highlighted just how much creativity and passion lives in the Shoals. And for the community? It’s a reminder that some of the best desserts you’ll ever have aren’t in big cities, they’re right here at home.

The Aftertaste

With this win, Lee Street Café hasn’t just earned bragging rights, they’ve solidified themselves as a must-visit destination for anyone with a sweet tooth.

If you weren’t at the event, consider this your sign. Go see what all the hype is about.

Because if last night proved anything, it’s this: the best dessert in the Shoals now has a name.
