Wings don't often rise to the top when thinking about the area's most exclusive cuisine, but they are central to many key celebration moments throughout the year, and represent the opportunity to approach the humble chicken wing with creative flair.

Therefore, in celebration of our first issue of Local Food Fight Magazine, we chose to enter all the wing-slinging restaurants we could find, into a bracket-style competition to kick off our first official Food Fight in the Shoals. The purpose of this friendly competition was to finally crown the Best Wings in the Shoals, while at the same time, celebrate the launch of the Shoals authoritative local dining guide.

This Food Fight started with a bracket of eight local restaurant contenders based on nominations from our social media campaign. Voters narrowed the competition to the Final Four for a head-to-head tasting round.
This Food Fight started with a bracket of eight local restaurant contenders based on nominations from our social media campaign. Voters narrowed the competition to the Final Four for a head-to-head tasting round.

What began as a casual social media poll, grew to solicit passionate comments and votes from wing-lovers from across the Shoals area, who were certain they knew exactly who produced the finest wings you could buy. As a result of feverish social media participation, we whittled down a list of eight contenders, to four masters of the field to engage in a head-to-head competition in the semifinal round: Soul: Wingery & Records (Florence, AL), Yummy Wings (Sheffield, AL), Mitchell's Smoked Meats (Muscle Shoals, AL), Big Man's BBQ (Florence, AL).

Fortuitously, we stumbled upon an added bonus of having two contenders from each side of the Tennessee river competing against one another in the semi-final round, so this bracket turned out to have some additional, yet friendly competitive energy.

For the head-to-head tasting round, we sampled wings of our choice from the menu of each restaurant, and in the process found ourselves some new, and some familiar locally owned treasures that we whole-heartedly encourage you to try!

Soul: Wingery & Records

105 S Poplar St, Florence, AL 35630

Our first stop took us just outside Downtown Florence to Soul: Wingery and Records, a spot that instantly feels like a hidden gem. From the moment you walk in, the vibe is undeniable. The space is quaint yet effortlessly stylish, with a speakeasy feel that invites you to slow down and stay awhile. Old-school R&B hums through the speakers. Smooth, nostalgic, and perfectly curated, setting the tone as you approach the counter.

The menu is thoughtfully built, offering a variety of well-seasoned, whole wings paired with classic sides and house-made dipping sauces that elevate every bite.

After scanning the options, we landed on the herb and garlic wings, and it was the right call. Perfectly cooked, tender on the inside with just the right amount of crisp on the outside, as the only dry-seasoned wing of our selections.

The seasoning was bold but balanced, making them the kind of wings you immediately start planning to come back for.

To round things out, we added an order of fried green tomatoes, a true Southern staple done right. Golden and crispy, with a slight tang from the tomatoes themselves, they paired beautifully with the house-made remoulade. That sauce alone deserves a moment: creamy, zesty, and just sharp enough to cut through the richness, it tied the whole dish together and had us going back for one more dip every time.

Between the music, the atmosphere, and the attention to flavor, Soul isn’t just serving food, it’s creating a mood. And if this first stop is any indication, we’re off to a very strong start.

Yummy Wings

324 S Montgomery Ave, Sheffield, AL 35660

Yummy Wings is the kind of spot that doesn’t try too hard, and doesn’t have to. It’s unassuming from the outside, but inside, it’s all about bold flavor, generous portions, and that unmistakable energy of a place that locals keep coming back to.

From the moment you step up to the counter, you can tell this place is serious about wings. The menu is stacked with options—crispy, saucy, dry-rubbed, and everything in between. There’s no fluff here, just good food done right.

We went straight for the wings (obviously), opting for the Honey BBQ. What stood out immediately was the texture. Tender wings under a generous coating of sauce. Whether you lean toward something sweet, spicy, or somewhere in between, Yummy Wings delivers. Each bite is packed with flavor, not just on the surface but all the way through.

What really makes Yummy Wings hit, though, is the value. It’s casual and offers its wings at the most approachable price point of all of the restaurants we sampled. It is easy to see how fans raved about these wings because at this price, they can come back to this eatery time and time again .

In a region full of barbecue and Southern staples, Yummy Wings carves out its own lane and does it well. It’s the kind of place you stop by once and then find yourself craving a few days later. And if you’re serious about wings, it’s not just worth a visit, it’s one you’ll want to repeat.

Mitchell's Smoked Meats

2800 S Wilson Dam Rd, Muscle Shoals, AL 35661

There are certain places you walk into with high expectations, and Mitchell's Smoked Meats is one of them. Their brisket has quickly become one of my favorite things I’ve eaten since moving here.

From the start, you can tell Mitchell’s is serious about what they do. The aroma hits first; that deep, smoky richness that only comes from time, patience, and knowing exactly what you’re doing. It’s not overpowering, just inviting enough to build the kind of excitement that only great barbecue can.

What stands out most is the consistency of flavor. This isn’t a one-note experience. It is layered, thoughtful, and clearly the result of someone who understands the craft. Whether you add sauce or not almost feels irrelevant (though several options are there), because the meat holds its own completely.

The sides round things out in all the right ways. Classic, comforting, and exactly what you want alongside a plate of expertly smoked meat. Nothing distracts from the main event, but everything complements it.

Though we weren't able to sample Mitchell’s wings soon enough to judge for this competition, voters did advance the eatery into the final four. As such, it was important for us to include the experience we did have, and give them an honorable mention. And when something as simple as brisket can stand out as one of the best things you’ve eaten in a new place, that says everything.

Big Man's BBQ

1510 N Pine St, Florence, AL 35630

Walking into Big Man's BBQ feels like stepping into everything a true barbecue joint should be. It’s small (just a tiny footprint), but that only adds to the charm. The space is clean and bright, with classic red-and-white gingham tablecloths lining the tables, and the unmistakable aroma of smoked meat hanging in the air before you even make it to the counter. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t need to say a word. You already know you’re in the right spot.

There’s something deeply nostalgic about it. The setup, the smell, and the simplicity took me right back to my grandfather’s restaurant, where I practically grew up. Where the food was honest, the portions were generous, and the experience was always about more than just what was on the plate. Big Man’s carries that same spirit, and you feel it immediately.

The menu sticks to what works: classic, no-frills barbecue done right. We ordered wings (or course!) along with brisket. Every bite had that slow-cooked depth of flavor, the kind you can’t rush and definitely can’t fake. I'd argue these were the most tender wings of the lot, and slid off the bone as they were enjoyed.

The sauce was rich, tangy, just the right amount of mustard complementing the meat without overpowering it. It’s clear that everything here is built on experience and consistency, not trends.

What makes Big Man’s stand out is that they deliver exactly what you want from a barbecue restaurant: comforting ambiance, and flavorful food, rooted in tradition. Where the food speaks for itself and the friendly service makes you want to return.

Big Man’s BBQ is a reminder that simple, done well, is hard to beat. And for me, they offer more than just a great meal. It’s a feeling, one that keeps calling you back.

The Winner of the Best Wings in the Shoals 2026

After weeks of tasting, voting, and plenty of heated debate, the results are in. The title of Best Wings in the Shoals goes to Big Man’s BBQ.

From the smoky, perfectly rendered flavor to the crisp bite and signature house finish, Big Man’s didn’t just compete, they stood out. Every round of this tournament was about more than wings; it was about consistency, character, and the places locals genuinely return to again and again. Big Man’s delivered on all of it.

Thank you to every restaurant included and every reader who voted and followed along. This wasn’t just a contest, it was a snapshot of what makes the Shoals food scene worth paying attention to.

We’ll be back soon with the next feature in the series.
